BOLÍVAR: A CAPTIVATING DIVE BETWEEN HISTORY AND MODERNITY
The Department of Bolívar, situated along the Caribbean Coast, encompasses 45 municipalities and two districts, with its capital, Cartagena de Indias, being the most populous and culturally rich region. This city offers immersive experiences that allow visitors to deeply understand its customs, stemming from the fusion of three ethnic groups: Amerindian, European (from the colonial era), and Middle Eastern immigrants.
Colonial Architecture
Exploring colonial architecture is a must-do in Cartagena. The walled city and the majestic Castillo de San Felipe provide a unique glimpse into the Spanish influence in the region. It is advisable to engage in these activities with tour guides to gain comprehensive insights into all the historical sites.
Iconic Festivities
Bolívar stands out as one of Colombia’s most important regions for festivals and fairs. For instance, on February 2nd, the patron saint festivities in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria are celebrated. Mompox hosts Colombia’s most immersive Holy Week, featuring Eucharists, processions, and reenactments of significant Catholic Church events, such as the Last Supper, the Stations of the Cross, and the death and resurrection of Jesus. The most emblematic event, however, is the Independence Day celebration held in Cartagena and several department municipalities on November 11th, where the streets are filled with color to commemorate liberation from Spanish rule. During this festivity, the National Beauty Pageant of Colombia and the Popular Reign, which selects the Independence Queen, take place.
Enchanting Cuisine
Experiencing the local cuisine in popular markets and squares where exquisite delicacies are sold is one of the most significant aspects of visiting Bolívar. The traditional Mercado de Bazurto, for example, offers dishes such as posta cartagenera, fried fish with coconut sauce rice, seafood rice, fish soup, and salpicón de toyo, among others.
